Yes, I am just looking for the CDI Engine itself. Also need Complete CDI Wiring Harness with Computers.

 

I already have the 2002 car. I am doing a CDI Diesel Conversion to a Petrol model. I have always wanted a CDI in the States, due to rising Fuel costs.

James, i am quite courious, did you have licensed your car in the US? Was it very difficult?

 

I still have a pretty good chance that my company will move me to the US (Ill In or GA), and i really want to take my smart with me. Everybody tells me: don't even think about ist!

I bought the Smart car through a Registered Importer (RI) that stopped importing &

converting the little Smart car last year, due to very costly conversion.

 

As far is bringing your own Smart to the States. You can have it converted, But that is

very costly. Or you can bring it in under a Temporary Visa to expire 1yr after importation.

Aufgrund der mangelden Konservationswilligkeit seitens der smart Center gegenüber der Selbermacher würde ich sowas NICHT empfehlen.

In den USA wird das Problem wahrscheinlich noch verschärft aufgrund der Tatsache, dass es dort überhauptkeine sCs gibt ....

 

Stattdessen in nen Flugzeug setzen, billig in NL oder so einen kaufen und damit nach Hause brausen ... is doch ne schöne Reise und macht mehr Spass, als an der verworrenen Technik zu verzweifeln....

Hhhhm. Udo's statement is not too encouraging. Since the difficulties to get a new car licensed, i beliefe this is not a real option.

 

I believe the difficulties are not so much on getting the thing done mechanically, but to fix all the electronics, the ECM, controls etc.

 

Another idea would be, to buy a diesel, which had i.e. a front accident. You cat take out any parts you need (wiring, controls), without running into the risk that some major poarts were missing.

I understand this conversion is very complicated. I appreciate any concerns on behalf of experts. However, my heart is set on doing this conversion, even if it is difficult.

 

I like your idea of buying a Wrecked/Salvage complete Smart CDI.

 

Any ideas where I can find a Smart Salvage Yard or find a Wrecked CDI??

Here you can get a feeling how much you need to invest. Shipping to US seaport will add maybe another 1000$.

 

There are not many CDI replacement engines on the market, and getting a new spare engine from smart could easily cost 3000 EUR + harness + ECM + a couple of other items.... a 5000$ investment without beeing shure having all whats needed finally for the transplantation.

 

If wou want to do it (which wouldn't make a sense only from a commercial point of view), and you do not want to burn too many $$$$ go for a wrecked bowl.

Your help has been tremendous and very appreciated! In all my 5 or more years of

studying the Smart I have never received as much help as you have provided me in the

past 2 days..thats a fact.

 

I will go with the Wrecked Smart option.

As far as I know the smart cdi was going to be purchased officially in canada recently? But I wonder if this would help in any way?

 

Otherwise I personally would advice to go for a complete package for the swap. I have done a Range Rover diesel conversation and got lots of probs with missing electronic parts necessary for the functionality of the immobilizer system...
